Antelyapelyap (butterflies) Story

When all the old people look out they see Antelyapelyap (butterflies). I love them, as a little girl I used to chase them. The butterflies live out lpway (creek) way. When you go to lpway there are many butterflies moving about in the grass and between the grass heads and flowers. I still see them now and I paint them.

Patsy Mpetyan Morton

Patsy’s work is country. I take clay from my country and make pots. I have lived here on my country for over the 50 years of land rights, seeing all the changes. My father didn’t let me see a whitefella until I was 12. When I was a young woman, I walked between the cattle stations. Coniston, Mount Allan (now called Yuelamu) and Napperby. My husband and me worked very hard on the cattle stations. I was working at Mount Allan in the silver caravan getting clay from the dam. We had a kiln at Mount Allan. We did wood firing at the outstation (Arrungkey). After firing we painted them and then took them to the market. People loved them. Not one of the bowls were left. I am a Mpetyan woman. Living here in my father’s father’s country. I am really happy at this place. At Arrungkey. Patsy, an established visual and ceramic artist since the late 70’s.
